Dear EN friends,

IEEE Cyprus Entrepreneurs Network (EN) was established in January 2013 and is a volunteer effort that aims to trigger entrepreneurship in Cyprus and help people interested in it to get networked and find valuable team members in order to create technological start-ups. More specifically it intends to bring together IEEE members and other professionals (non-members who are working or who are educated in an IEEE designated field – which are all fields of Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law and Policy) in order to cooperate with electrical or electronic engineers in Cyprus and abroad, so that they come up with an innovative product or service that can be exploited commercially.

Every January the elections for EN’s Executive Committee take place. The composition of EN’s EXCOM is the following: Chair, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Program Director. Any additional EN volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in the EXCOM’s meetings and help as much actively as they wish in order to meet EN’s goals and to implement the organization of our events and initiatives. You can refer in this link: http://bit.ly/1sCnxs4 to see in detail EN’s goals and objectives.

I would like to announce the annual elections for EN’s Executive Committee (EXCOM). You can send an e-mail at cyprusen@ieee.org with your declarations of interest for the elections together with a pdf form of your CV by January 30, 2015.

In order for EN’s goals and activities to be fulfilled there need to be several volunteers who contribute to our efforts.

Some of the responsibilities that an EXCOM member / volunteer in EN might undertake are the following:
• Creating and editing videos of events or promotional videos,
• Updating EN’s websites with content relevant to the interests of its members,
• Promoting EN through Social Media,
• Finding suitable programmes that are announced in IEEE’s website that could be implemented by EN,
• Attending EN’s meetings, taking photos, capturing video.

Please note that only IEEE members with renewed membership state for 2015 will be eligible to participate in the EXCOM’s elections, thus I need you to send together with your CV also your membership renewal in IEEE. To see how you can join IEEE and the consequent benefits, click in the following link.
Since the beginning of the New Year we are going to introduce EN membership with a cost of €10 per year. IEEE Cyprus EN members enjoy the benefit of joining a national IEEE entrepreneurs’ network. This network will provide its members with the opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs / future entrepreneurs on a national level. In addition, members will have access to information on entrepreneur members’ goals, pursuits, activities and contact details. Finally, they will benefit from discounts or free entrance to IEEE Cyprus EN events. For more information on how to become an IEEE Cyprus EN member please contact us at: cyprusen@ieee.org.

The rest of professionals who want to participate in EN’s newsletter and receive notifications about EN’s events can also send us the contact e-mail address they would like to register at: cyprusen@ieee.org.

Please, keep in mind that the deadline for declarations of candidacy for EN EXCOM is 12 pm on January 30, 2015.

October 2nd, 2014

October 7th is devoted to IEEE Day 2014, which is the 5th time in history when engineers worldwide will celebrate the anniversary of the first IEEE members gathering to share their technical ideas in 1884. The Theme for this year’s IEEE Day is “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”.

For this purpose, IEEE Cyprus Section co-organises with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cyprus a lecture under the title “Metamaterial Arrays and Applications: FSS, EBG & AMC structures”, which is going to be delivered by Prof. J(Yiannis) Vardaxoglou, Professor of Wireless Communications, BSc, PhD, CEng, FIET, FREng, FIEEE, Loughborough University, Leicestershire, LE11 3TU, UK that is going to be held on Tuesday, 7th October 2014, 17:00 – 18:00, at Room ΧΩΔ 02 – 011, New Campus, University of Cyprus.

The event is going to begin with a short presentation of IEEE and IEEE Day by Anastasia Georgouli, IEEE Day 2014 Cyprus Section Ambassador.

The abstract of the lecture is the following:

Interest in metamaterials and their applications has taken an explosive growth. The potential take-up of these structures in communication and sensing systems is primarily due to the control of the amplitudes, frequencies and wave-numbers of propagating and non-propagating electromagnetic modes to an extent that was not previously possible. The control of electromagnetic waves can be applied in various application fields such as, indoor and outdoor communication systems, communicating mobile objects, transport systems (cruise liners and high-speed trains), space/earth communication and microelectronics at µ-wave and mm-wave frequencies, Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs), Electromagnetic Bang Gap (EBG) and Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) structures are all periodic arrays and forms of metamaterials. Metamaterials are, in essence, the materials of the future, since the main purpose for their study is to be able to go beyond where naturally occurring substances and current material structures research have taken us. By combining different microscopic elements into large-scale designs, one will be able not only to create materials with fundamentally new properties but also to fabricate others that have properties on demand, as required by new technologies. The above description of advantageous properties of metamaterials gives a small insight into the large potential industrial application of these concepts. An overview of the work spanning over two decades in FSSs, EBGs and AMCs of the Wireless Communications Research Group at Loughborough University, UK will be presented.

Additionally, you can read a short biography of the speaker here:

Yiannis C. VardaxoglouYiannis C. Vardaxoglou received the BSc degree in Mathematics (Mathematical Physics) and PhD degree in 1981 and 1985, respectively, from the University of Kent at Canterbury. He joined Loughborough University of Technology in 1988 as a Lecturer, was promoted to Senior Lecturer in January 1992 and was awarded a personal chair 1998. He was the Head and the first Dean of the Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering School at Loughborough University from 2006 to 2012. He established the Wireless Communications Research (WiCR) group at Loughborough University and founded the Centre for Mobile Communications Research.
