Drug Delivery and Ultrasound

Chemotherapy is the most extensively used treatment in the fight against malignant neoplasms. Unfortunately, chemotherapy use is plagued with numerous side effects. These side effects are caused primarily because of the non‐specific nature of the treatment as the drug is capable of killing normal and cancerous cells alike. Several drug delivery systems have been investigated to reduce these side effects by encapsulating the chemotherapeutic agent in a nano-sized carrier until it reaches the tumor site. These carriers include: solid nanoparticles, micelles, liposomes and e‐liposomes. Once the nanoparticle reaches the desired location, ultrasound is applied to release the chemotherapy drug directly to the cancer site, thus avoiding any interaction with the healthy cells in the body. This way the adverse side effects of chemotherapy are minimized.

This presentation will discuss two novel chemotherapy carriers (micelles and emulsion-Liposomes) used in conjunction with acoustic radiation to treat malignancies

Short Bio:

Dr. Ghaleb A. Husseini graduated with a PhD in Chemical Engineering (Biomedical Engineering emphasis) from Brigham Young University in 2001 and joined the American University of Sharjah (AUS in the United Arab Emirates) as an Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department January 2004. He has been elected into the Distinguished Lecturer Program- IEEE-EMBS (Jan 2014-Dec 2015). He was promoted to Associate Professor and Professor in 2008 and 2013, respectively. Four years ago, Dr. Husseini took a sabbatical leave which enabled me to travel to Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, and work in Dr. Jeffrey Hubbell’s laboratory).

Dr. Husseini has published 76 journal articles (in addition to 1 book chapter and 1 patent) and 40 conference papers/abstracts. In addition, he was a Theme Editor for a special issue in Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and is currently serving on the Editorial Board of the International Review of Applied Sciences and Engineering (IRASE).

Abstract: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a method for cross sectional tissue imaging, is gaining significant ground as diagnostic tool in various fields. However many early disease changes remain below the resolution of the technique. In OCT the resolution is fundamentally limited by the spectrum of the laser source and the optics used. Enhancements can only be marginal since the spectral increase required for further axial resolution improvement cannot be supported even by the highest end lasers. The lateral resolution of OCT can be improved by use of high numerical aperture (NA) objectives. However, use of a high NA objective restricts the depth of focus. In this presentation we propose some novel methods for axial and lateral resolution improvement which are independent from the above limitations, providing the opportunity for cellular and subcellular resolution imaging, without increasing the cost and complexity of the system. A method for axial resolution improvement was developed, which was based on the modulation of the axial PSF of the system. With this method the axial resolution could be improved by a factor of 7. The application of this method in Time Domain OCT differs significantly from that in Frequency Domain OCT systems. However different formulations have been developed for both. Their mechanical basis and experimental validation will be presented. Also a method for lateral resolution improvement based on the oversampling of the OCT images was developed. The information in the oversampled OCT images was used to estimate the locations of multiple scatterers, assuming each contributes a weighted portion to the detected signal. This method was applied to laterally oversampled OCT images, and a resolution improvement of a factor of 3.7 was experimentally demonstrated. The development of the above methods can significantly improve the resolution of OCT images allowing imaging of diagnostically crucial cellular level characteristics. Such technological improvement can increase the effectiveness of OCT as a tool for diagnosis of very early cancer and other diseases

Biography:Evgenia Bousi received the Diploma degree (BSc/MSc) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 2004, and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cyprus in 2012. From 2004 to 2005 she was a software engineer at the software centre of Siemens, Greece. From 2005 to 2007 she was a research assistant at the Biomedical Imaging and Applied Optics Laboratory, University of Cyprus. She is currently a Research Fellow at KIOS Research Center for Intelligent Systems and Networks of the University of Cyprus. Her research interests include Optical Coherence Tomography, Biomedical Optics, Optical Imaging, Signal and Image processing and new technologies in clinical applications for the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment. She is involved in various projects funded by the University of Cyprus and the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus She is a member of the IEEE, and the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK) and Greece (TEE).

Motivated by the increasing dependence of many systems on battery energy (e.g.,
wireless sensor networks, mobile robots, electric vehicles), we will discuss the problem of optimally controlling how to discharge and recharge a non-ideal battery so as to maximize the work it can perform over a given time period and still maintain a desired final energy level.
Modeling a battery as a dynamic system, we adopt a Kinetic Battery Model (KBM) and formulate a finite-horizon optimal control problem. The solution is shown to be of bang–bang type with the property that the battery is always in recharging mode during the last part of the interval. We then extend the problem to settings where recharging is only occasionally feasible and show that it can be reduced to a nonlinear optimization problem. We further study the problem of optimally controlling a set of non-ideal rechargeable batteries that can be shared to perform a given amount of work over some specified time period. In this case, we seek to
maximize the minimum residual energy among all batteries at the end of this period. We show that the optimal solution must result in equal residual energies for all batteries as long as such a policy is feasible. This simplifies the task of subsequently deriving explicit solutions for the problem.


Christos G. Cassandras is Head of the Division of Systems Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University. He is also co-founder of Boston University’s Center for Information and Systems Engineering (CISE). He received degrees from Yale University (B.S., 1977), Stanford University (M.S.E.E., 1978), and Harvard University (S.M., 1979; Ph.D., 1982). In 1982-84 he was with ITP Boston, Inc. where he worked on the design of automated manufacturing systems. In 1984-1996 he was a faculty member at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He specializes in the areas of discrete event and hybrid systems, stochastic optimization, and computer simulation, with applications to computer and sensor networks, manufacturing systems, and transportation systems. He has published over 300 refereed papers in these areas, and five books. He has guest-edited several technical journal issues and serves on several journal Editorial Boards. He has recently collaborated with The MathWorks, Inc. in the development of the discrete event and hybrid system simulator SimEvents.

Dr. Cassandras was Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control from 1998 through 2009 and has also served as Editor for Technical Notes and Correspondence and Associate Editor. He was the 2012 President of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) and has served as Vice President for Publications and on the Board of Governors of the CSS. He has chaired the CSS Technical Committee on Control Theory, and served as Chair of several conferences. He has been a plenary speaker at many international conferences, including the American Control Conference in 2001 and the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control in 2002, and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.

He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2011 IEEE Control Systems Technology Award, the Distinguished Member Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society (2006), the 1999 Harold Chestnut Prize (IFAC Best Control Engineering Textbook) for Discrete Event Systems: Modeling and Performance Analysis, a 2011 prize for the IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge competition, a 1991 Lilly Fellowship and a 2012 Kern Fellowship. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the IFAC.

We cordially invite you to submit your research work in “LTE Deployment and Research Trends” Special Session which is organized by the Vehicular Technology Society & Aerospace and Electronics System Society (VTS & AESS) Joint Greece Chapter, in conjunction with the “17th Pan-hellenic Conference on Informatics (PCI 2013)”.

This special session aims to: (a) stimulate a discussion on the technical challenges of LTE deployment that will aid operators in achieving their goal of meeting rapidly growing mobile data demand; (b) communicate current research efforts and new results on LTE and LTE-Advanced; (c) provide a framework of interaction between academia, industry and mobile operators towards applied research and cooperation.

In this context, we seek original papers focusing on theoretical, simulation and practical approaches associated with physical, MAC, network and application layer of an LTE based system. On the other hand, unpublished experience and/or results of “live” LTE network performance, lab testing, problems, solutions and proposals are encouraged to be submitted. Abstract: The mathematical modeling of tumor growth and progression has been thoroughly studied and many such models exist in the literature. The majority of these modeling techniques are formulated in a deterministic context, thus lacking any information regarding the uncertainty of the predicted future state of the tumor size. Many are theoretically well defined and can have useful practical applications; for example such models can be used to define general optimal treatment protocols through onstrained optimization. However, modern healthcare is continuously becoming less general and more personalized. In this paper we propose a sequential probabilistic mixture model for individualized tumor growth forecasting. The model uses prior information from the general population and becomes more individualized as more observations from the subject are sequentially taken into account by the model. In our extensive simulation study we illustrated the superiority, under uncertainty, of the suggested multi-process dynamic linear model against the single process alternative. The validation of our model was performed with experimental data from mice and the results show that after few observations from a tumor are obtained and included in the model, the latter becomes both more individualized, in the sense that it adjusts its parameters in order to explain the growth of each individual tumor and much more e cient ffi in terms of precision regarding the prediction of the tumor size.

Biography: Dr Achilleas Achilleos completed his undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics (M.O.R.S.E.) at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Warwick in 2006. He then earned a full scholarship to study an MSc in Statistical Science in the London School of Economic and Political Science. In 2007, Achilleas joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bristol for a PhD in Applied Statistics. He completed his PhD in 2011. He is currently working in the Research Center for Intelligent Systems and Networks (K.I.O.S.) at the University of Cyprus for a project concerning mathematical modeling of cancer progression and development of therapy strategies with model-based control methods. Among his major research interests are smoothing parameter selection for kernel density and regression estimation in the presence of measurement error, linear dynamic modeling with Bayesian forecasting, multilevel modeling, and probabilistic reasoning and inference under uncertainty using bayesian causality networks.

Περιγραφή: Μία από τις θεμελιώδης έννοιες της ανάπτυξης και λειτουργίας εμπορικών τηλεπικοινωνιακών δορυφόρων είναι αυτή του κύκλου ζωής. Η σωστή και αυστηρή διαχείριση κάθε σκέλους αυτού του κύκλου είναι το κλειδί για την μεγιστοποίηση των πιθανοτήτων επιτυχίας σε ένα τομέα όπου το βασικό λειτουργικό εργαλείο δεν επιδέχεται καμίας βελτίωσης ή συντήρησης μετά την τοποθέτησή του σε γεωστατική τροχιά. Τις μεθόδους αυτές ανέπτυξαν μέσα από δεκαετίες εμπειρίας οργανισμοί όπως η NASA και η ESA και σήμερα όλες οι εταιρίες που ασχολούνται με την εμπορική ανάπτυξη και λειτουργία τηλεπικοινωνιακών δορυφόρων έχουν κληρονομήσει μία πλήρης κι ολοκληρωμένη διαδικασία η οποία έχει αυτό ακριβώς σαν στόχο. Σε αυτή τη διάλεξη θα περιγράψουμε αυτά τα σκέλη του κύκλου ζωής όπως είναι η κοινή πρακτική της βιομηχανίας, καθώς θα δούμε με ποιο τρόπο αυτή η μέθοδος οδηγεί σε επιτυχημένες διαστημικές αποστολές.

Βιογραφικό: Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1977, σπούδασε στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Surrey Ηλεκτρολογία και Ηλεκτρονική Μηχανική όπου και ασχολήθηκε με την μηχανική των Ραδιοκυμάτων (RF Engineering) καθώς και τη Διαστημική. Διακρίθηκε από τον οργανισμό Surrey Satellite Technologies (SSTL) για την συμμετοχή του σε διαγωνισμό σχεδιασμού τροχιάς αστερισμού δορυφόρων τηλεπισκόπισης για την διαχείριση φυσικών καταστροφών. Συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στο UCL στο Λονδίνο και ειδικά στο εργαστήριο διαστημικής Mullard όπου to 2003 απέκτησε τίτλο Master in Science στην τεχνολογία Διαστημικών Σκαφών και Δορυφορικών Επικοινωνιών και διάκριση στη μεταπτυχιακή εργασία με θέμα την πειραματική μελέτη σκοπιμότητας του οργάνου εντοπισμού εξωηλιακών πλανητών της αποστολής της ESA “Eddington”, τεχνολογία που χρησιμοποιήθηκε μετέπειτα στην αποστολή της NASA, Keppler.
Ήρθε στη Κύπρο το 2005 όπου και ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του σαν μηχανικός τηλεπικοινωνιών στο τομέα της κινητής τηλεφωνίας. Αργότερα εργάστηκε σε οργανισμό παροχής ευρυζωνικών δορυφορικών υπηρεσιών όπου με επιτυχία διαχειρίστηκε την εγκατάσταση του πρώτου αμφίδρομου δορυφορικού δικτύου της εταιρίας. Τέλος από το 2011 εργάζεται στην Avanti Communications σαν ανώτερος μηχανικός τηλεπικοινωνιακών συστημάτων. Ηγήθηκε την ανάπτυξη της δορυφορικής πύλης του συστήματος HYLAS 2 στην Κύπρο, καθώς και την λειτουργική διαμόρφωση του ωφέλιμου φορτίου επικοινωνιών (payload) του δορυφόρου HYLAS 2. Σήμερα δουλεύει σαν ειδικός ανάπτυξης συστημάτων για τις μελλοντικές αποστολές της Avanti όπως το HYLAS 3 σε συνεργασία με την ESA.
