PES – UCY Student Chapter

by Jake T.

The University of Cyprus Power & Energy Society Student Chapter comprises a UCY student annex of the international community of IEEE that is active in the area of Electric Power. The organization and operation of the annex is performed in volunteer basis and its primary objective is the active participation of the student community to the local (and consequently to the international) developments in the area of Electric Power.
The UCY PES Student Chapter has a Facebook page.

Activities on IEEE Day

The PES Chapter participated in the dissemination and new member attraction activities on IEEE Day. PES Chapter members visited several classes at four universities in Cyprus and gave presentations for IEEE and custom-made flyers about the benefits of joining IEEE. The event was co-organized with the IEEE Cyprus Section and the Student Branches at the universities.

Active participation in the organization of the MELECON 2016 conference

The Chapter is very active in the organization of the flagship Region 8 conference MELECON 2016 which will be held in Limassol, Cyprus in April 2016. The Cyprus Chapter Chair acts as the Conference General Co-Chair, while members of the Chapter are involved as Technical Program Committee members and in the local organizing committee. Based on the submissions received, half of the conference papers are in the area of power systems and renewable energy sources.

Drug Delivery and Ultrasound

Chemotherapy is the most extensively used treatment in the fight against malignant neoplasms. Unfortunately, chemotherapy use is plagued with numerous side effects. These side effects are caused primarily because of the non‐specific nature of the treatment as the drug is capable of killing normal and cancerous cells alike. Several drug delivery systems have been investigated to reduce these side effects by encapsulating the chemotherapeutic agent in a nano-sized carrier until it reaches the tumor site. These carriers include: solid nanoparticles, micelles, liposomes and e‐liposomes. Once the nanoparticle reaches the desired location, ultrasound is applied to release the chemotherapy drug directly to the cancer site, thus avoiding any interaction with the healthy cells in the body. This way the adverse side effects of chemotherapy are minimized.

This presentation will discuss two novel chemotherapy carriers (micelles and emulsion-Liposomes) used in conjunction with acoustic radiation to treat malignancies

Reminder: IEEE Cyprus Entrepreneurs Network (EN)’s Annual Elections

Dear EN friends,

IEEE Cyprus Entrepreneurs Network (EN) was established in January 2013 and is a volunteer effort that aims to trigger entrepreneurship in Cyprus and help people interested in it to get networked and find valuable team members in order to create technological start-ups. More specifically it intends to bring together IEEE members and other professionals (non-members who are working or who are educated in an IEEE designated field – which are all fields of Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law and Policy) in order to cooperate with electrical or electronic engineers in Cyprus and abroad, so that they come up with an innovative product or service that can be exploited commercially.

Every January the elections for EN’s Executive Committee take place. The composition of EN’s EXCOM is the following: Chair, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Program Director. Any additional EN volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in the EXCOM’s meetings and help as much actively as they wish in order to meet EN’s goals and to implement the organization of our events and initiatives. You can refer in this link: http://bit.ly/1sCnxs4 to see in detail EN’s goals and objectives.

I would like to announce the annual elections for EN’s Executive Committee (EXCOM). You can send an e-mail at cyprusen@ieee.org with your declarations of interest for the elections together with a pdf form of your CV by January 30, 2015.

In order for EN’s goals and activities to be fulfilled there need to be several volunteers who contribute to our efforts.

Some of the responsibilities that an EXCOM member / volunteer in EN might undertake are the following:
• Creating and editing videos of events or promotional videos,
• Updating EN’s websites with content relevant to the interests of its members,
• Promoting EN through Social Media,
• Finding suitable programmes that are announced in IEEE’s website that could be implemented by EN,
• Attending EN’s meetings, taking photos, capturing video.

Please note that only IEEE members with renewed membership state for 2015 will be eligible to participate in the EXCOM’s elections, thus I need you to send together with your CV also your membership renewal in IEEE. To see how you can join IEEE and the consequent benefits, click in the following link.
Since the beginning of the New Year we are going to introduce EN membership with a cost of €10 per year. IEEE Cyprus EN members enjoy the benefit of joining a national IEEE entrepreneurs’ network. This network will provide its members with the opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs / future entrepreneurs on a national level. In addition, members will have access to information on entrepreneur members’ goals, pursuits, activities and contact details. Finally, they will benefit from discounts or free entrance to IEEE Cyprus EN events. For more information on how to become an IEEE Cyprus EN member please contact us at: cyprusen@ieee.org.

The rest of professionals who want to participate in EN’s newsletter and receive notifications about EN’s events can also send us the contact e-mail address they would like to register at: cyprusen@ieee.org.

Please, keep in mind that the deadline for declarations of candidacy for EN EXCOM is 12 pm on January 30, 2015.

Best regards,
Anastasia Georgouli
