IEEE International Energy Conference (ENERGYCON) 2018

ENERGYCON 2018 is the 5th IEEE International Energy Conference and will be held between 3-7 June 2018 at Limassol. It is organized by the IEEE Cyprus Section, the IEEE PES Cyprus Chapter, and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus, in partnership with IEEE Region 8.

ENERGYCON covers a broad range of electric power and energy systems topics and is open to contributions that are related to the theme “Towards Self-healing, Resilient and Green Electric Power and Energy Systems”.

ENERGYCON aims to attract scientists, professional engineers and engineering students from all over the world and give them the opportunity to present and publish their work, discuss, exchange ideas and knowledge as well as network for future collaborations. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the conference proceedings and appear in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

Industrial IoT Quest

IEEE Region 8 in collaboration with GE Europe is hosting an Industrial IoT Quest, which is essentially a 1-month online competition taking place on a cloud-based platform open to all members in our Region. The winners of this competition will have the chance to make their own company and create new apps. Everybody that is taking part in this competition will receive training and valuable experience, so everybody will be a winner. This is another small step towards getting IEEE closer to industry.

Open-source model and how to get involved

This Thursday 23 March 2017, the Computer Science Society of University of Nicosia co-organizes with IEEE UNic, the event The Open-Source Model – How to get Involved.

The main supporters of the event is ACM Cyprus and IEEE Cyprus.

The event will take place at room M208 from 18:00 to 20:00.

The speaker is the Chairman of ACM Cyprus Chapter, Dr. Gjermundrod Kjell Harald.

In this talk the open-source model of software development will be presented. A short history of this community with the key participants (like Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds) will be overviewed along with various examples of open-source licenses (e.g. GNU General Public License, BSD, etc.). In addition, ways on how you as a student can get involved in the open-source community and what is expected of its members will be discussed.

Coffee and pastries will be available for the participants as well as IEEE “swags”.

Μέσω του προγράμματος αυτού, ο μαθητής του Λυκείου θα έχει την ευκαιρία να ζήσει για μια βδομάδα τις εμπειρίες που ζει καθημερινά ένας φοιτητής στους κλάδους της Τεχνολογίας και Μηχανικής.

Οι μαθητές θα χωριστούν σε μικρές ομάδες όπου θα ασχοληθούν με τον σχεδιασμό και υλοποίηση κατασκευών, π.χ. μικρά robot, ραδιόφωνο, πομπό σήματος, αυτόματα συστήματα ελέγχου, φωτοβολταïκά συστήματα, γέφυρες, κ.α. Οι κατασκευές αυτές θα γίνουν με την βοήθεια των καθηγητών του τμήματος μηχανικής χρησιμοποιώντας λογισμικά σχεδιασμού και όργανα μετρήσεων.

Οι μαθητές θα δραστηριοποιηθούν για μια βδομάδα σε ένα περιβάλλον υψηλής τεχνολογίας όπου θα αποκτήσουν συγκεκριμένες γνώσεις και εμπειρίες όσο αφορά τον κλάδο της μηχανικής. Θα έχουν επίσης την ευκαιρία να ρωτήσουν και να μάθουν από τους καθηγητές του τμήματος θέματα σχετικά με το μέλλον της τεχνολογίας και μηχανικής, προοπτικές του κλάδου, συναφή επαγγέλματα, έρευνα και καινοτομία, κ.α.

Το πρόγραμμα θα λάβει χώρα στο κτήριο Research & Technology του Πανεπιατημίου Λευκωσίας – Αίθουσα  A12

Abstract: Big data in healthcare is experiencing the perfect storm: The volume is increasing exponentially with accelerating speed, the variety of data ranges from multi-omics information to lifestyle measures with the help of mobile devices backed by cloud infrastructures. State of the art analytical methods are generally limited by computational approaches. Furthermore, the convergence of data analytics, sophisticated modelling approaches and cognitive computing gives promise to solve the big data challenges in healthcare and lifescience. Data analytics especially in todays ‘omics era yield results of large volumes given computational challenges are overcome. Sieving through the results requires expert and translational knowledge. Cognitive computing can play a significant role in making transparent results. Cognitive computing tools can be used to create hypotheses to guide experimental studies but also as prior knowledge that drives data analytics. The increasing amount of data requires a larger amount of computation that can at some point only be tackled using supercomputers. In biophysical modelling we have already shown how the computational challenge can be overcome using high performance computing systems. The sophistication of computer modelling of biophysical processes has made the transition from basic research to translational science and medicine. It is feasible today that data in healthcare will be augmented by simulation of biophysical models tailored to each patient. Cognitive computing is a promising path to make the analytical results transparent. The IBM WatsonTM technology allows analysis results to be represented within a global context of accumulated knowledge of published literature. To view data and analysis in that global context will not only enable verification of results, but also helps accelerate discovery and identification of, for example, new targets in drug discovery. The combination of data-driven and knowledge-based analytics in a cognitive computing environment becomes a powerful way to create hypothesis and to limit the search space so that it can efficiently be tested using traditional laboratory methods. The IBM WatsonTM technology allows one to find “the needle in the haystack” of today’s big data challenge. Hence, the power of big data can only be unleashed by embracing new approaches in data-driven analysis within a cognitive computing environment. This creates a holistic view that places big data analytics into the context of the accumulated knowledge of the scientific community.

A short biography of the speaker:

Matthias Reumann

Matthias Reumann – Biography Matthias Reumann (1978) received the Masters of Engineering in Electronics with the Tripartite Diploma from the University of Southampton, UK, in 2003 and continued his PhD studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with Prof. Olaf Doessel at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Universitaet Karlsruhe (TH). Reumann focused on translational research in cardiac models and his PhD with summa cum laude in 2007. The research was awarded with two prestigious research awards by both clinical and biomedical professional societies. Reumann continued research in multi-scale systems biology at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY. His work focused on creating high resolution heart models that scale on supercomputers that yielded several high profile publications in Science Translational Medicine, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Supercomputing. He expanded his research interest to Genomics in 2010 at the IBM Research Collaboartory for Lifesciences – Melbourne, investigating higher order interaction of single nucleotide polymorphisms in breast and prostate cancer in collaboration with Prof. John Hopper. In 2011, Reumann build up and the healthcare research team at the IBM Research – Australia laboratory with focus areas in healthcare analytics, medical image processing and genomics. The goal in genomics was to bring next generation sequencing into a production environment in a public health microbiology diagnostic unit. Reumann moved back to Europe in December 2013 and joined the IBM Research – Zurich laboratory where his research focusses on sustainable, resilient health systems research to bridge the divide from bench to bedside to society. Reumann is associate editor of the IEEE Journal on Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine, Senior Member of the IEEE and has served on the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society from 2009 – 2013 as well as on the IEEE Technical Advisory Board form 2011 – 2012. His research is mentioned in editorials and reviews and has received numerous awards.

Drug Delivery and Ultrasound

Chemotherapy is the most extensively used treatment in the fight against malignant neoplasms. Unfortunately, chemotherapy use is plagued with numerous side effects. These side effects are caused primarily because of the non‐specific nature of the treatment as the drug is capable of killing normal and cancerous cells alike. Several drug delivery systems have been investigated to reduce these side effects by encapsulating the chemotherapeutic agent in a nano-sized carrier until it reaches the tumor site. These carriers include: solid nanoparticles, micelles, liposomes and e‐liposomes. Once the nanoparticle reaches the desired location, ultrasound is applied to release the chemotherapy drug directly to the cancer site, thus avoiding any interaction with the healthy cells in the body. This way the adverse side effects of chemotherapy are minimized.

This presentation will discuss two novel chemotherapy carriers (micelles and emulsion-Liposomes) used in conjunction with acoustic radiation to treat malignancies

Short Bio:

Dr. Ghaleb A. Husseini graduated with a PhD in Chemical Engineering (Biomedical Engineering emphasis) from Brigham Young University in 2001 and joined the American University of Sharjah (AUS in the United Arab Emirates) as an Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department January 2004. He has been elected into the Distinguished Lecturer Program- IEEE-EMBS (Jan 2014-Dec 2015). He was promoted to Associate Professor and Professor in 2008 and 2013, respectively. Four years ago, Dr. Husseini took a sabbatical leave which enabled me to travel to Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, and work in Dr. Jeffrey Hubbell’s laboratory).

Dr. Husseini has published 76 journal articles (in addition to 1 book chapter and 1 patent) and 40 conference papers/abstracts. In addition, he was a Theme Editor for a special issue in Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and is currently serving on the Editorial Board of the International Review of Applied Sciences and Engineering (IRASE).
